A study on the variant phases between copied books of "The
Tale of Genji"
"The Tale of Genji", what we call "AobyousibOoshimabon",
which is revised by Teika Fujiwara, is currently read and studied.
But, in some studies of "The Tale of Genji", the textual criticism is
still incomplete.
While I was working on "Genjimonogataribbepponsyuusei" and
"HosakabonbGenjimonogataribsakuinhen", I started to wonder why on
earth "Aobyousibon" is the generally acknowledged text. The
technological situation today presents an ideal climate in which to
reexamine the texts of "Genji", since accurate printed copies are
readily available and computers facilitate reading studying. In this
study I took up 4 kinds of fundamental texts from
"Aobyousibon","Kawatibon", and "Beppon". I reexamined the differences
in quality and interpretation between these texts, and the phases of
each manuscript became clear on the basis of the accumulated data. I
examined characteristic similarities and differences, and researched
the aspects of the Genji world in the variant texts and their
alternative versions. It is a new technique to consider the phases in
various texts, inquiring into the quality of literary works. By this
general inspection of a large quantity of data, a new related group
will be added to the aspects of handwritten texts of the Tale.
